Awake body surgery
Awake Liposuction in Ottawa
Liposuction removes selected fat deposits to refine contour. It is the aesthetic operation with the longest track record under tumescent local anesthesia, so awake liposuction is the foundation of our approach.
Liposuction at a glance
| Typical operating time | About 1 to 3 hours |
|---|---|
| Awake suitability | Often a good candidate for awake surgery |
| Typical return to desk work | Desk work often within 3 to 7 days |
| Anesthesia | Local anesthesia with or without sedation. General anesthesia arranged if needed |
| Setting | Outpatient, with an anesthesiologist present throughout |
Times are typical ranges for planning, not promises. Your plan is individualized.
What is liposuction?
A dilute solution of lidocaine and epinephrine is infiltrated into the fat until the tissue is firm (tumescent). Small incisions allow a thin cannula to remove fat. The solution numbs the area and limits bleeding. Liposuction is a contouring treatment, not a weight-loss method.
Who may be a good candidate
- People with localized fat, good skin elasticity and stable weight
- Those in good general health with realistic expectations
- Patients who prefer to avoid general anesthesia where it is safe to do so
Why awake liposuction may work
Large safety series of tumescent liposuction under local anesthesia, including 4,380 and 9,002 consecutive patients, report low complication rates, and reviews of liposuction describe tumescent technique as improving safety. You can be positioned comfortably, walk soon after, and often avoid the grogginess and nausea some people experience after general anesthesia.
When awake may not be the right choice
The total local anesthetic dose is calculated by weight, which limits how much can be treated at once. Large volumes or many areas may be staged or done with deeper sedation or general anesthesia.
Your awake liposuction journey
1. Before surgery (pre-op)
We map treatment areas while you stand and review your health, medications and clot risk.
- A consultation to review your goals, health history, medications and previous surgeries, and a physical examination
- An anesthesia assessment to decide whether an awake plan is appropriate and safe for you
- Photographs, with your consent, and a written plan, quote and consent form
- Medication guidance, including when to stop blood thinners, certain supplements, and smoking or vaping
- Fasting instructions from the anesthesia team. Follow them exactly
- A ride home and an adult to stay with you after surgery
2. Day of surgery (intra-op)
Tumescent fluid is infiltrated, then fat is removed through small incisions. Position changes are made for comfort. Compression garments are applied at the end.
- You arrive, change, and meet the surgeon and anesthesiologist, and your markings and plan are confirmed
- An IV and monitors are placed. The anesthesiologist stays with you from start to finish
- Local anesthetic is given. Expect brief stinging, then numbness, and light sedation if planned
- You can listen to music, talk with the team, and tell us at any time if you feel discomfort
- Afterward you rest in recovery, receive written instructions and go home with your driver
3. Recovery (post-op)
You are observed in recovery, given written instructions and pain-control guidance, and scheduled for follow-up. Call us or seek urgent care for fever, spreading redness, severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, chest pain, shortness of breath, or leg pain or swelling.
| When | What is typical |
|---|---|
| Days 1 to 3 | Swelling, bruising and drainage of tumescent fluid. Compression garment worn. |
| Week 1 | Many return to desk work in a few days. Walking is encouraged. |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Gradual return to exercise. Swelling and bruising fade. |
| Months 2 to 6 | Swelling resolves and final contour emerges. |
Timelines are general and vary. Your surgeon gives you instructions specific to you.
Anesthesia options
Anesthesia options range from local anesthesia, with or without sedation, to general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist is present throughout your procedure and recommends an approach after reviewing your health, the extent of surgery and your preferences. If an awake approach is not suitable, general anesthesia is arranged. Plans can change during surgery if comfort or safety requires it, including deepening sedation or converting to general anesthesia.

Alternatives
Lifestyle measures, non-surgical contouring, no treatment, or liposuction under sedation or general anesthesia.
Risks
Contour irregularity, asymmetry, bleeding, infection, prolonged swelling, fluid collection, altered sensation, blood clots, local anesthetic toxicity and, rarely, serious internal injury. Sedation adds the possibility of airway support or conversion to general anesthesia.
Anesthetic risks include reactions to medications, breathing or airway events, the need to deepen sedation or convert to general anesthesia, and, rarely, transfer for further care. All surgery carries risk, and results are not guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions about awake liposuction
Will I feel anything?
The area is numbed, but you may feel pressure or movement. Sedation can be added for comfort.
Can I have several areas done at once?
It depends on total anesthetic dose, duration and your health. Larger plans may be staged.
Is awake liposuction safe?
Large series report low complication rates, but all surgery carries risk. We discuss yours.
Will my skin tighten?
Skin response varies. Loose skin may need other treatment.
How long until I see results?
Swelling hides the result at first. Many see improvement in weeks, with final shape in months.
