Preparing for Awake Surgery: A Practical Guide
Good preparation makes an awake procedure feel calmer. Here is a practical way to think about it.
Know your plan
Ask what level of anesthesia is planned, who will be with you and what may change on the day. The Comfort Compass and welcome form help you put your preferences into words.
Tell the team everything
List every medication and supplement, including weight-loss medications, blood thinners and herbal products. Mention previous anesthesia problems, allergies, sleep apnea and nicotine or cannabis use. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless your team tells you to.
Plan your room
Choose your music or podcast, download it, and think about temperature, blankets, an eye mask and conversation level.
Plan your recovery
Arrange a ride home, an adult to stay with you, easy meals and a comfortable place to rest. Read your instructions before the day, not on it.
